Scallops are succulent, delicious and nutritious morsels popular with seafood lovers everywhere. These Alaska Weathervane Scallops (Patinopecten caurinus) are a special treat with a naturally sweet taste and a buttery texture.
Alaska Weathervane Scallops are large bivalves that swim in waters off of Kodiak Island and Yakutat in the Gulf of Alaska. Once shucked from their shells, they present an ivory-white meat that looks like a marshmallow. Though you can also grill and bake scallops, we recommend searing these scallops for a golden brown crust and wonderful flavor. We recommend this Brown-buttered scallops over creamy polenta recipe from our friends Samantha Ferraro of The Little Ferraro Kitchen and Bellingham Seafeast.
These scallops come to us wild-caught from our friends on the F/V Ocean Hunter and the F/V Provider, which are part of a scallop fishing cooperative.
These scallops are shucked, then frozen-at-sea, and packed into 1.25-pound vacuum-sealed bags. No preservatives added (dry-packed).
Scallops size is 20/30 per pound.
There is a lot of information about managing scallops for sustainability and how scallop fishing works in this article from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
