In this video, young fisherman Jesse Warren talks about fishing with his family on the F/V April L and growing up on a tender*, in addition to trolling and being a member of our fishermen-owned co-op Seafood Producers Cooperative based in Sitka, Alaska.
Trolling is fishing for wild salmon with hook and line. Catching salmon on a hook, one at a time, produces a high-quality product with minimal impact on the ocean. Typically, a troller is a small fishing boat--usually a mom and pop operation or a single fisherman working alone. Jesse talks about working as a fisherman with an unusual job. And he also introduces us to his beautiful wife and daughter, who are frequently out with him on the boat.
Jesse notes that being a fisherman is a whole lot more than a "real job" and thats what makes our work special.
*A tender, for those outside of the industry, is a boat that aggregates deliveries from other fishing boats and brings their catch to the processing plant, so that fishermen can stay out on the fishing grounds. A tender also services fishermen with groceries, ice and more.
